SUNKEN CITY BOAT TRIP | 20 GBP

Times: 09:00 to 18:30

Enjoy a day combining ancient history with a beautiful boat trip and delicious lunch. See the sunken ancient city from a boat, visit the Simena Castle and enjoy the crystal clear turquoise waters of the coves around Kekova - a place not to be missed. The trip includes transfers, boat trip, lunch and your tour guide.

ITINERARY:

- Kekova Boat Trip: From Ucagiz Village (Recommended for everyone)

We collect you from your accommodation around 09:00 for the 50 minute land journey to the village of Üçağız.

The boat leaves around 10:20 and it goes directly to the Kekova National Park, saving you the longer boat journey described in the first itinerary.

The first stop will be at the Aquarium Bay for a swimming stop and also serve the morning tea. The second stop will be at the Shipyard Bay where ships were built during Lycian times. There are some ruins along the beach as well as some underwater that you can snorkel over and around.

Next you will cruise over the sunken city as our guide tells you about the history and points out when to look through the glass bottom of the boat. It is prohibited to swim or stop over the ruins so the boat will continue to move.

After finishing the tour of the sunken city you will go to Gökkaya Bay, where lunch will be served on board. The bay is also a nice place to swim and to see the CARETTA CARETTA (sea turtles) and possibly swim with them. After that you head to another swim stop at Burc Bay, known for its cold water fed by underground springs. The next stop will be Pirate Cave but swimming is prohibited there because of the Mediterranean seals and as long as the coast guard is not around our captain will take the boat inside the cave.

The final stop is at Kaleköy, location of the Simena Castle. You will have one hour, during which you can walk up to castle and see the amazing view of KEKOVA or walk around the island to see how the ancient and modern structures blend together. You can enjoy homemade ice cream in the waterfront cafes or just snorkel around the island and the famous half-submerged Lycian Tomb.

Then it is time to head back to Üçağız and the captain will ask if you want one last swimming stop. You will also be served afternoon refreshments.

Once you have returned to Üçağız, we will drive you back to your accommodation.

If your preference is to swim more and if you don´t mind the bus journey then we recommend the second tour which leaves from Ucagiz Village.

Note:

All Kekova Boat Trips: Transfers are included. We serve lunch onboard. Included in the price is your tour guide who will tell you about the history of the area.

Drinks are extra and we have everything onboard so you should only take a small beach bag with you for the day.

Make your choice and let us know. We will organize the best tour for you.

 Activity briefing

Kekova is the name of the region encompassing the island of Kekova, the villages of Kaleköy and Üçağız and the three ancient towns of Simena, Teimussa and Tersane (meaning “shipyard”). Teimussa is now the village of Üçağız, where sea kayaks and boats set off for tours of the area. Kekova was once joined to the mainland but it suffered a series of earthquakes and these geological influences caused it to sink six metres below the sea.

The area is off-limits to swimmers and divers, so kayaking is the closest you can get to the underwater foundations, walls and mosaics dating back over 2000 years. The group often disembarks at the village of Simena, inaccessible by road and surmounted by a castle with brilliant 360° views.

No previous experience is necessary, all training is provided by Mediteran Travel Tour Guides and assistants. Mediteran Travel provides all of the technical equipment you will need including flotation vests.

For sea kayaking it is recommended that you bring swimming goggles or a dive mask and snorkel as part of the trip includes swimming in the area of the sunken city.

We also offer week-long kayak tours on demand for groups.

“What had drawn this rather unlikely mix of people together was the desire to try out an increasingly popular outdoor pursuit, sea kayaking. And what better place to try it than the tiny islets, rocky headlands and submerged ancient ruins around Kekova, just a half-hour drive east of the deservedly popular resort of Kaş”

TERRY RICHARDSON

 Starting time

07:00 a.m from the Mediteran Travel office in Kalkan.

 Itinerary

The tour starts around 7:30 am when everyone gets on the bus in Kaş for the drive to Uçağiz (three mouths) village, which takes about 45 minutes. As the assistant guides start preparing the equipment, the BCU-certified senior kayaking guide will begin the 20 minute safety briefing and short training session for the new kayakers and novices. Your guide will demonstrate how to get in and out and paddle and rudder usage, and of course, how to keep your balance!

You will then enter the water and start your first paddling session from Üçağiz to get accustomed to the kayak and practice proper navigation. This period takes the group to Kekova Island and is followed by a swimming break. From there the group will slowly paddle over the ancient Lycian Sunken City to get an unparalleled view of the ruins but also so as not to disturb them. From there, the group will set off for Tersane Bay and then Simena. Following this you will move on to Kaleköy for a break or to enjoy lunch.

On most excursions there is the option to walk up to the ruined castle and explore the extensive necropolis. In the afternoon we head back towards Üçağiz for an up close view of more impressive Lycian sarcophagi and then return to our kayak base. This is followed by our vehicle transfer home.

Children Policy

Children should be 12 years old or older. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. This activity may not be suitable for many children under 12 years of age nor for those who are exceptionally small. If children under 12 do want to come along, please check with your tour guide first! Sometimes they may be permitted to go with their parents or one of the tour guides in a two person kayak, providing fun for the whole family!

 Safety

Always safety first! All tour guides carry 1st aid kits and are trained in 1st aid procedures. All participants are required to wear safety flotation vests. For the normal tour group with little or no experience, the protected harbour and island area around Kekova causes no problems with the wind and waves. If the guide decides the weather is too rough for the experience of the group, they will do a different activity while waiting for the wind to calm down.

We can take up to 40 people in one sortie.

KALKAN Kalkan is a place to fall in love with … Kalkan Sunset
A small peaceful Mediterranean resort and fishing town on the beautiful Turquoise Coast of Turkey, Kalkan has not been touched by mass tourism. More sophisticated than the usual resort town, Kalkan appeals to travelers looking for more than a “sun and sea” holiday. According to the Sunday Times, Kalkan attracts the kind of visitor who would also enjoy Tuscany or the Dordogne. The Guardian likens the town to “the Italian Riviera minus the poseurs.”
Because of its great charm, Kalkan has a growing number of perennial visitors who say the town is the only holiday destination they would choose to visit repeatedly. There is simply no other town quite like Kalkan along Turkey’s coast.
"Mouse" and "Snake" Islands in Kalkan Bay
Kalkan curls snuggly around a historic harbour sheltered at the foot of the towering Taurus Mountains. (Read more about the geography of the region at our Lycia website here) The town overlooks a beautiful bay in which islands seem to magically float upon the shimmering sea.
Narrow streets twist down to the harbour, lined with old whitewashed villas with shuttered windows situated alongside small local specialty shops and restaurants in historic buildings. Overhead hang original carved Ottoman Greek timber balconies garlanded with thick masses of brilliantly coloured bougainvillea cascading to the streets below. It is a very special place with a unique atmosphere.
Why is Kalkan so special?
Not only is Kalkan beautiful, but unlike other Turkish coastal resort towns Kalkan’s main economy is tourism and therefore its citizens put much pride and effort into the town’s historic preservation. Because of this, Kalkan has retained the texture of its history by protecting its distinctive Ottoman Greek architecture (it was once an Ottoman Greek and Turkish fishing village). Very strict building codes keep the town small and architecturally blended with the historic heart of the town known as “Old Kalkan”.
"Old Kalkan"
Besides the famous “Kalkan Style” historic architecture, the many excellent restaurants of Kalkan contribute to the special atmosphere within Kalkan. Good dining has always been the way of life in Kalkan and continues today. In fact, Kalkan is said to have the highest number of restaurants and bars per inhabitant or square meter on the Turkish coast (over 100 of them!). Additionally, Kalkan is especially renowned in Turkey for its numerous roof terrace restaurants and bars which offer a wonderful view of the town, sea and stars. It’s also nice to sit at one of the many fine harbour-side restaurants and watch the pleasure boats and fishermen leave early in the morning as you eat your breakfast, or see the fishing boats return with the day’s catch in the evening.
There is lots to do during the day and nigKalkan streethtlife is fun, but laid-back. You won’t find noisy, wild nightlife here, like in some other coastal resorts.
Kalkan has many fine qualities, but without a doubt, it is the people of Kalkan who make the town extra special.
The people of Kalkan warmly welcome you, and you may at first be surprised by the universal friendliness within the town. This, along with warm Turkish hospitality is the basis of life here and the people of Kalkan sincerely enjoy getting to know their guests. So don’t hesitate to accept one of the many tulip-shaped glasses of çay (tea) you will be offered while you amble along Kalkan’s winding streets. You won’t be hassled while you are a guest of Kalkan – the town is hassle-free and is proud to be so. You will find a mixed population here, consisting of locals, some Istanbul Turks and Turks from other cities who have made Kalkan their home and own small businesses, as well as a small number of well-educated foreigners who have settled in the town.
So, “Hoş Geldiniz!” – we extend a warm welcome to you from Kalkan and look forward to meeting you soon…
